Why are the BBC being so slow in announcing the official start date of Doctor Who this year?

It was confirmed that it would start on the Sci Fi channel in the US on 18th April, a couple of weeks ago.

It's a fair guess that it will start in early April (provbably 5th or 12th) in the UK, but why no official announcement yet?

The BBC announced the start date about a month before it began last year, and were promoting it on various chat shows and things like The Weakest Link DW special, as well as trailers, for weeks in 2007.

Does anybody know if the BBC have changed their rules on annoucing forthcoming shows or something?

Update:

Apologies to everyone who answered the other instance of this question (I posted twice by mistake). The other instance has now been deleted.

Update 2:

Doctor Who used to be on another channel in the US, and they always showed it a very long time after the BBC. Now that it has been picked up by the Sci Fi channel, it's obviously on just a week or two after it's original BBC air date.

i totally agree with you. maybe they want to keep the audience in suspense for longer, as i hear this is is going to be the biggest season ever. also i suspect there have been a lot of false rumours flying all over the place, and thats why the bbc are reluctant to tall us more. another thing maybe that they still havent finished filming???? thats been bugging me for ages. i still am really annoyed as i thought it was going to start this Saturday! yep im sure it will start in early april, or even the 29th march, if were really lucky. it mmust be close becuse y else would they be advertising in the cinema and already got a trailer out? no im sure its not the bbc's rules, its definately the plan to attract more viewers.

I'd guess that the BBC has plans to show a big film or a special event on a particular Saturday but these plans may fall through so they are keeping Doctor Who's start date open until they can confirm their scheduling.

Hehehe...it's televisual foreplay man. Since it's been back, the production team has been extremely skilled at that. They're just stretching our torment out a little bit until they can gratify us - maybe they're also slightly unsure of the quality of the first few episodes this year, so are relying on a wave of relief from us all that it's back to keep the euphoria up for those first few weeks.

I don't know, I saw a trailer last time I went to the pictures and it looked amazing but it just said coming soon.

I should write them and ask. It's ABSOLUTLY killing me!! I am going through Doctor Who withdrawals. I've gotta start reading the books or something... anything to get my Doctor Who fix... (I know... I'm a lame-o)
