Why isn't Nick Drake up there with all other music legends?

im not saying hes not famous but not many people will claim him to be one of the best solo artists of all time which he certanaly is.. (pity he only gaind big fame after his death)

Update:

njwm thats the presise reason im asking why have so many people NOT heard of him

He was too shy to tour, which killed his chances whilst he was alive. After death, it's true that they're peddling his recordings like crazy, but it's hard... I mean, apart from the songs themselves, I don't think there's even one defining moment people can look to and say 'wow, that must have been a wild time, I wish I was there...' I mean, he's got three albums when he was alive, and they're nice, but I sort of wonder if there's any track on them that could have been a killer single, they're more organic, working together as a whole... and he's folk, not rock; if he'd lived to introduce a bit of electricity into his recordings things might have been more interesting, but at a time when rock was the mainstream, being folk wasn't going to earn him that many kudos... Surely it's fair to say he's a bit of a folk legend though?

Cult figure... probably he could have had it in his lifetime if he'd been outgoing enough to project and work for it instead of sitting around being depressed, but he didn't want it badly enough. Too nice for big fame? I'm going to put on Five Leaves Left though, that'll have to be enough....

I love Nick Drake and I think a lot more people rate him than you think. But does it really matter? I'd hate for him to be hyped up too much, it would take away some the of the grace of his songs.

He's pretty highly regarded, I think he's reached a wider audience now. I love his stuff.
