Male Dominance?

Hello ya'll,

I have a Rat terrier who just turned 1 year old. He has not yet done the "thing" yet, and when we go to the dog park it gets riduculois because there will be certain dogs (male all the time) where he will show his dominance by humping them... I was wondering if anyone else ran into this prob, and how do you get them to stop. I try putting him on his back to be submissive, and somtimes it works, but if it doesn't then he goes right back at it. Thanks!

Update:

I do want to breed him...

If you don't have him neutered, that should seriously help. Otherwise, you need to get him trained and work on his dominance issues.

What you are describing is an alpha roll and it more often backfires than works (especially in this situation - he isn't showing dominance to you, why would you think this would work?). Most dog parks have regulations about unaltered dogs (otherwise they would just be literal breeding grounds, with even more dog fights than there are already). I assume yours either doesn't (bad idea) or you're violating the existing rules.

The only way to stop it is by controlling your dog - either keep him out of off leash areas or have him under reliable voice control.

Neutering is really the only way to fix this. I go to the dog park all the time and the humpy dogs are always the unneutered ones. So either don't take him to the park or get him neutered. Why do you need to breed him? There are plenty of homeless dogs and you shouldn't contribute.

this is a problem that a spray bottle full of water will fix. keep one with you at all times, and give him a good squirt, and a stren NO, when he exhibits behavior that is not appropriate. At 1, he is still a puppy, and needs to learn what he can and cannot do. Also, if you are not planning on breeding him, think about getting him neutered...this may help the problem also. Good Luck !!!
