    In my lifetime:

    The Vietnam War

The assassination of Robert F Kennedy

    The Kent State shootings

    The Oklahoma City Bombing

    Hurricane Katrina

The worst though is 9/11, just tragic.

The Greatest American Tragedy is that we keep repeating history, by not learning from the past. We need to understand what has happened and do something to really change what happened so it won't happen again.

Beside thinking of my own tragedy, the list you have above is pretty impressive.

In my time, i would expect 911 to have made the biggest impact on people, because of it being so recent, unexpected and how it caught us off guard.

Religious Discrimination has sapped this country of some great talent.

Christianity has been so worshipped as an idol that it has suppressed functional thought and action on many an occasion! Too bad. But the past is the past.

The last official governmental straw that I know of was The Privacy Act of 1974! This act made it illegal to give any minority status or preferential treatment to minority religious status as was previously allowed by the Civil Rights Act of 1965! The Privacy Act only then allowed race, sex, handicap and age, minority status symbols.

Maybe in the future we can heal from the spiritual civil war over this? Hope springs eternal!

Healing be unto you and yours and me and mine in

The number of lives lost in the tragedy of Pearl Harbor could have been greatly reduced, if the military people in charge would have taken the warnings given by the new radar operators seriously.

There are so many that it's not even possible to list them all here.

In terms of the sheer number of people affected. I guess I would say Pearl Harbor, because that got us into WWII and we (along with the other Allies) caused massive damage, and the developments of that war brought about the Cold War.

In terms of sadness, I would go with something that has been totally forgotten, because then the victims don't even have the dignity of a memory. So... Bath School Disaster (wiki Andrew Kehoe).

I think the greatest tragedy is that it seems that no one on earth has understanding compassion love and acceptance of others if we did none of these other tragedies would have even taken place ;)

People not realizing that the government on many occasions has lied to them and continues to do so right under their nose. Either because they refuse to see it or know about it and willingly ignore it.

Jimmy Carter becoming president. Try buying a house during his time, or anything else. He was a joke and the mood of the country hadn't been that low since the depression.
