What does a mortician do to the bodies that come in?

Do they remove organs/blood/stuff or do they leave everything in there? Do they add chemicals?

I should know how to answer this question...my husband is an embalmer.

First a small incision is made in the carotid artery and vein. The artery will be for injecting fluid, the vein for drainage. After this is done...they will mix their formaldehyde into the embalming machine. Formaldehyde has many different types of which they mix....some are extra strength, some for color addition, etc. Once the machine has mixed the chemicals together....it is time to inject. A small canula is placed in the artery facing the body and opened. As the formaldehyde is injected...the blood from the body will be drained. THis is done until most of the blood is gone and the body begins to take up the chemicals. Once this is complete, the neck is sewn up. Next a trocar is used. A trocar is a piercing metal instrument used to pierce through the body cavity and vaccum out left over blood from the heart and intestinal matter, etc. After getting rid of that material...they will use another trocar with a hose attached to inject cavity fluid into the cavity. After, the body is cleaned, the mouth is closed, and the body is allowed to lay and continue to firm up.

Hopefully this helps get rid of the rumor that they take out organs and whatever else that everyone thinks!

The mortician DOES embalm the body by injecting formaldehyde and ethanol into the blood stream and pumping it throughout the body. The embalming fluid is also injected into any remaining organs, which are hollowed out by the mortician as well. The chemicals help preserve the body.

Leonard is completely incorrect, nor have I any clue where he got that info. Under NO circumstances do morticians remove any organs, especially the brain. Organs are NOT removed during the embalming process. Organs are only removed by a pathologist if there is an autopsy, otherwise the body stays intact.

at least this way he is not spending a bunch of money on them. If he had a living mistress she would want him to buy her stuff, so you are actually coming out ahead. And this way you don't have to give him any, you can save it all for me.
