Lead is an element and is a heavy metal. It is resistant to corrosion and has a low melting point and is soft so it is easy to work with.
However it is expensive and exposure to lead has been found to cause brain damage so its usage has been greatly reduced in the last 20 years.

What I'd like to know is: why is this question posted in the Diseases and Conditions category?? ;) If the child is 7, I don't think you need that complicated of an answer. Other than it's a soft material called an element, and it used to be in pencils, now it's graphite, though still called pencil lead. And it used to be in paint, but it's poison, so not any more. Then maybe you'll need to explain what an element is!
