Where was your computer made and developed? You might want to know that first. It may well have been designed by an American company, and made in Taiwan so....... that might explain it. Since it was Americans that created most of the programming and such things for the Internet and word processing; it kinda makes sense to me that it would be based on American English. And just so you know Spell check doesn't catch all things, and says that some spellings are wrong when I know they are right. So understand your frustration.
Don't get me wrong.... I wish we spoke more"proper" English in America (just like it better; it must be the Brit in me) but it's just one of those cultural things that happens. I mean, ever heard the difference between Spanish from a Spaniard and Spanish from a Cuban? It's a very similar thing as the many types of English.

'Pirate Girls Kick Butt' really has no clue as to what she is talking about...no offense. The language programming used by Yahoo is Java. Java was developed by Canadians...in Canada.
Canadians utilize both the 'Queen's English', along with the bastardized 'American English'. So her saying that the majority of software is developed in the USA is totally false.
But from what I understand, Yahoo USA has everything set to the American spell check default. Also if you are using Firefox...it may be set to the American default as well. I believe you can change this.
When I use Yahoo Canada, I don't have this problem:
Hopefully that link does appear as Yahoo Canada...it does for me, as I live in Canada. Someone living outside of Canada may see something else though.
Do you have this problem when using Yahoo UK & Ireland?
Here's the link:

English as used in the UK is an evolving language, both written and spoken. The English employed by North American people is their own version. It is the English of the USA. Why can't you see that?

You've got to be kidding, the UK spells words different than the US and still has a Queen!
I suppose the next thing you're gonna tell me is that you drive on the left hand side of the road or something else crazy like that.

Unfortunately, it is programmed to accept as Queen's English only the kind of English spoken in the borough of Queens, New York.

I don't think this is really a poll type question.
Yes, it does make you change the spelling on some words, like honour or behaviour. I guess it's because this site has accepted the American spellings as standard.

You have to activate the Explorer as to which English you want.
Yahoo spell check is US English in mine too. Making me forget all I learnt.

I'm American and I learned to spell colour...and honour..and it wasn't correct unless you did
I'm not sure when it got changed over here but, could be when the Chicago Tribune started spelling through..thru.......and other words phonetically.( less work for the type setter, I guess)..
I still use the "old world" spelling...looks more professional to me..

Because it's programmed to correct words according to how they're spelling in America.
If this place were based in Europe I'm sure the Americans would be asking similar questions.
Just because Americans and Europeans spell certain words differently doesn't mean either version is wrong.
