Nuke the whole drive with DBAN (Darik's Nuke And Boot) and reinstall XP. To use DBAN, burn it to a disc, put the disc in the drive and reboot your machine. When the DBAN interface comes up on the screen, type "autonuke". This will automate the erasing process. Once this is done (it can take a couple of hours depending on the size of your HD), remove the disc from the drive, reboot the machine and insert the XP cd to reinstall it.

Very interesting dilemma! If you formatted the HD prior to the install, it cannot possibly have 2 OS systems running? Try it again. Format the drive first, making sure nothing is on there before you install the new OS.

in the blue setup page it asked you to create a new partition and format the old one and you did not, so now you have two partitions. You can reinstall XP again and delete all partitions and get one Operating system and a clean HD.
