How many more?

homers would Mays have hit had he not played in Candlestick park[a distinct disadvantage because of its terrible wind even worst in left field]?

Update:

MAYS ONLY MISSED 1952 AND PART OF 1953

If the Giants stayed in new York, which they should have, he probably would have had 75 more home runs, provided they continued to play in the Polo Grounds.

I saw Willie Mays' 660th HR in Shea Stadium. He hit it off of Doug Rau of the Dodgers in 1973, the problem was that no one knew that would be his last. Willie was in the service during the Korean War and missed the 1952 season, and some of the 1953 season, and that alone, may have cost him 60 HR's; which would have given him more than Babe Ruth.

Candlestick, by the way, was a dump.

He might have gotten 20-30 more. 50 at the most. Mays is in my opinion, the best ever, but stadium change wouldn't acount for much, maybe 3 or 4 homers a year. And the army isn't an excuse for him... he would've not been able to play as long if he played those earlier years.

Interested fans can go to individual player pages on BaseballReference.com and click on the "neutralize stats" option, which re-maps actual stats to a standardized league-season and park. It doesn't restore playing time missed (sorry, Willie, those two years in the service stay gone) but it does put careers in the same mathematical context.

Aaron finishes with 803 homers (+48).

    Mays, 694 (+34).

    Bonds, 791 (+29 so far).

    Ruth, 720 (+6).

    Ted, 519 (-2).

    And so on.

I think Willie Mays would have hit around 140 more homeruns if he didn't miss 4 years because of the Army. 35 a year for 4 years, but he may have hit more, one will never know, but that would put him about 800 homereuns. He ended up with 66o, I think
