What Is "Satanic" Music? Why Do So Many People Think All Metal Is Satanic?

Did You know the Black Sabbath song "After Forever" is basically an advertisement for Christianity?

I'll probably get some People saying My Album Cover Avatar is Satanic, which will be funny considering I'm a Christian.

But I've been hearing all My life about how My heavy Metal is "Satanic" and "Evil" and it really makes Me annoyed.

Why do You think there are so many People who can't differentiate between Imagery and Reality? Who can't understand that just because a Band mentions Satan in a song doesn't necessarily mean said Band is Satanic? Why is "Satanic" such a hot button issue in Music?

Update:

    Hi Darth,

People who say metal is satanic are idiots. Sure there are certain bands that contain those "shock" gimmicks such as Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, and Slipknot. However, none of those bands are satanists.

Besides people who listen to real metal know that genres of metal such as Power, Speed, and Progressive Metal are no where even close to being considered satanic. If people call my music "satanic" then I just laugh in their faces about how stupid they sound.

Snap judgment much? No matter what we say you seem to have already made up your mind prior to asking this that it's awful and Satanic... Even so, you can't really make a generalization about any genre based on one song or even ten songs for that matter. Everyone has something that's a little different...people just get too wrapped up in labeling things these days. Personally, I've never heard any Satanic metal. I don't go looking for it so I've never found it. Sure there might be some satanic bands out there but that doesn't mean all of them are.

Maybe, back in the 70's, some Ned Flanders type heard Black Sabbath's debut album and complained about it at church the next day.

The main riff in the song "Black Sabbath" contains an interval called a tritone (a.k.a. an augmented fourth). It is said that, back in medieval times, this interval was considered to be evil or satanic and was banned by the church.

The debate about certain types of music being classed as "Satanic" has been going on for decades. Even rock 'n' roll music back in the 50's was considered evil because of it's so-called rebellious nature. With that in mind, what chance does Heavy Metal stand?

Its silliness, Darth. So few bands are truly satanic. I remember the big fuss over Judas Priest, and especially Ozzy's song Suicide Solution. Oooohhhh EEEvilllll....

By the way, the pentagram is not an evil symbol at all. It has just been portrayed that way in the media.

Edit: To the person below me..... Does it matter what a disturbed person listens to? So what be it Manson, or Elton John, the person is still screwed up. Blaming music is just a cop out.

Yes I am very sick of this stereotype but almost every true metal fan has gone through this but some naysayers never learn. Besides only like 2-3% of metal bands are ACTUALLY Satanic. and those usully lie within the black metal musicians(which I love). I been even called emo, since when is emo metal? Well, just ignore the ignorant and keep on enjoying metal!

I think it is because if the song mentions the devil or whatever, it is always kind of glorifing the devil isn't it? The songs never mention how it is evil to follow him or the how damaging is to rebel at times.

I don't think all heavy bands are bad, some, like you are Christians. Like Alice Cooper, and some member of Iron Maiden.

But bands like Megadeath or others have on their covers satanic symbols, and that can't be good.

Sometimes people might say that those group kind of convey a lifestyle that is ungodly(drugs, sex and rebellion).

I personally dislike rock music or heavy metal simply because it is not my cup of tea. I like soft, soothing music, like soft rock . I understand your point of view, because my husband is like you. He takes music as it is and he likes his rock.He explained to be that he like the "quality of the music and the artistic talents" of his rock bands and not the message that some might get from the songs.

I think the reason for which the "satanic"music is such a hot topic im music is that some young men, in the past who have committed horrible crimes had listen to that kind of music, like the murders in Columbine. Some people have difficulty seeing the line between fantasy and reality. Unfair to all rock fans, I suppose so.

If you like rock music and you mentioned that you are a christian , have you tried listen to listen to Christian rock music like Petra or 12 stones? My husband loves them!

    God bless:)

Preacher say My music is Satanic all the time ,,,,

There is no such thing as Satanic music ,,,,

When I sing about the devil its all in good fun ,,Unfortunitly some evanglist dont agree and think that any thing that is heavy is satanic ,,,,they center me out because I up front with my pagan beliefs (note: us pagans dont worship the devil)

If I were you I would quit the church ,,,if your preach cant accept the fact that you like your heavy metal then to hell with him ,,,,or you could always tell him to have chat with me,,

Dont let some preacher push you around ,,,

You should let these people hear some of my songs my names enough for them not even listen to my music

    KEEP IT LIVE

i think ever since jimmy page, the guitarist for led zeppelin, was known for being an occultist, people have been a little suspicious of metal and hard rock in general, especially since it was new at the time.

also, i think a lot of metal bands have artwork on their covers that seem satanic when really theyre just expressing themselves.

this is just my theory: maybe rockers who actually sing or talk about satan just associate him with a darker and more exciting aspect of life, or like him because hes the underdog and maybe they were opressed or their music is opressed. or maybe its like that whole "we're so good because we sold our souls to the devil" thing. who knows.

Source(s): im a fan of led zeppelin and enjoy my share of black sabbath too.

Since a few bands use satanic imagery in their acts, all metal bands got lumped together as satanic.Older people are afraid of what they don't understand so they condemn it .Satanism was just an easy out for them

    People generalize.

I think you have to see beyond "that". You know? When metal bands are singing about Lucifer, Satan, demons and devils, I think the underlying topic is that of anger, hate, vengeance, etc. It's like they're using those demonic creatures and beings as symbols for how they feel.

A lot of people don't think "deep". They don't see "beyond" images that cover hidden meanings.

    Oh yeah, Witchfynde. >:}
