The American Express Platinum charge card is not invitation only. All you have to do is apply and be willing to pay the $450 annual fee.
The card you are probably referring to is the American Express "Black"/titanium card. It is by invitation only and has numerous spending, income, etc. requirements.
So, back to the platinum. If the $450 is in your budget and you feel like you'll benefit from the extra services with the card (airline lounges, telephone concierge service, special events, etc.) then all you need to do is apply. You'll need good to excellent credit - probably a FICO score of at least 700. Results may vary though because AMEX uses it's own internal scoring model when approving credit.

It is not by invitation, but you do pay around a $400 annual fee. It is a good card if you travel, it will come with travel benefits.

I would love one. At first I hated the idea of paying off a card every month, but now it makes perfectly good sense to me. You stay out of debt and no interest rates!

Don't be fooled by the marketing surrounding these "prestige" credit cards. All credit cards work the same.
