Long Terminal Repeats?

alright so long terminal repeats have specific regions designated as U3, R, and U5. My question is why are the regions named the way they are? I know the functions and process, but I am curious as to how the names were determined. I cant find it anywhere!

U3 = unique 3' region
R = repeat

It sounds as if it could relate the the 3' and 5' (prime) areas on DNA.
