Gregor Mendel, and Austrian monk and scientist, was a very important figure in the study of biology and genetics. He helped form the bases of heredity, and is often called "The Father of Genetics". His work was neglected for a long time, but when rediscovered it was found very important and useful. You could talk about how the most important things are often neglected.

There is only 434,000 hits on Google for him.
