A good book to give you an overview about how real estate agents should structure their businesses is The Millionaire Real Estate Agent by Gary Keller of Keller Williams Realty.

If you think you want to be an agent, you might interview brokers at some reputable local companies where you live. Talk to them, ask them what questions you have about the business. You may even want to try to "shadow" a good agent for a day or two in order to see what they do.

Real estate laws and requirements to become an agent vary from state to state. Check with your state's realtor association to find out what the requirements are. Also get recommendations for good real estate schools.

For purchasing a home, find a good buyer agent who can represent your interests. There are 2 sides to each transaction, the listing side (listing agent represents the seller) and the selling side (buyer agent represents the buyer). Most states allow the buyer to have his or her own agent. Normally there is no extra cost to you, since the seller will be paying his agent the same amount of money whether he sells it or if another agent sells it. This is in your best interest if you have never purchased a home before, since your agent can guide you through the transaction.

Other than helping you find a home, your agent can negotiate on your behalf and resolve any problems which may arise. He or she can also recommend good lenders, since getting prequalified with a bank or other lender is the first step to purchasing a home.

Select an agent who specializes in helping buyers. Interview several agents and see who you feel most comfortable with. Try to find one with an ABR (Accredited Buyer Representative) designation or a CRS (Certified Residential Specialist). These designations signify that the agent has taken the time and trouble (as well as spent the money) to gain additional knowledge.

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavor.

I am a Realtor and the market in tough right now. I live in a suburb of Cleveland. A lot of forclosures. I would recommed to always have a second job. Also join a team you will get more leads. Go on websites: zillow.com and realtor.com and check out the market in your area. Also talk to agents in your area that have been in the business for over 20 years.

    Good lucK!

Also there are a lot of crazy lawsuits out there in Realestate so plan on getting an unbrella insurance plan. Especially when you put buyers in your car. We are always blamed when something goes wrong and he must be tough.

There is a book out there by a Hopkins last name that is supposed to be good.
