what is the mechanism that causes max heartrate to diminish with age?
I think this might be the main reason athlete's start slowing down.
Update:
not resting heartrate, max heartrate..something to with sa nodes or beta cells

heart rate does not diminish with age, only it stabilises from infancy to late adolescence .
