    Hello,

(ANS) If your laptop IS seeing the wireless router that at least proves your network card (network adapter) is performing correctly. I suspect the problem is as you say its just missing a setting some where.

OK!! Assuming your correct which I think you are, but remember with wireless internet connectivity your laptop (network card) requires x2 bits of vital information (i.e. settings).

NOTE: to join a wireless local network you must have x2 bits of information correctly set. These are as follows:-

No.1 The correct and specific SSID (service set ID) this identifies the network itself.

No.2 The correct and specific Encryption Key (WEP, WAP or WAP-PSK), the key must be 100% same number of characters or letters or alpha-numerics as the networks router.

NOTE: Only if these x2 bits of information are the same as the wireless router, only then will you gain full internet access. These settings are put into the laptops network card settings.

    Hope that helps?

    Kind Regards Ivan

Does the laptop have a DNS from the router's DHCP?

A DNS is needed to translate WAN domain names like google.com to WAN IPs.

    Start-->Run

    cmd

    ipconfig /all

see if WiFi adapter has a DNS IP (should be same LAN IP as router).

Then also from the command prompt, try pinging the router

"ping IP address of router" ie "ping 192.168.1.1" without quotes. If you get a response then you have a DHCP lease, just not a DNS server.

You can use free DNS servers

    Start-->Control Panel-->Network COnnections

Right Click "Wireless NEtwork COnnection" clcik Properties

Scroll down to TCP/IP--> Click properties

    check "Obtain IP address Automatically"

    but manually enter the DNS

First slot, enter the LAN IP of the router

Second slot enter the OpenDNS server

    208.67.222.222

You can add the other DNS by click advanced if you want.

    208.67.220.220

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS

Click OK/Close on all forms. Disable the Wireless connection by right clicking from "network COnnections" and click disable. Wait 10 seconds, enable it.

Try to ping www.google.com from the cmd, or open your web browser.

    Lastly,

Try using an ethernet cable for a minute to see if it works.

i had the same problem with my router

try to see if the driver was taken in properly

go to control panel and open device manager

it will give you a list of every device on your computer whether it has driver or it not so make sure your router is connected look at the model and try to find it in device manager than click on it, it will give a window on the top are tabs click on the one that says driver,

now your router should have come with a CD

if it doesn't your gonna have to search for the driver on the web, but you click install or reinstall driver

if that doesn't work what you can down grade your driver cuz what happens is that computers automatically upgrade and with vista haveing a lot of glitches some upgrade aren't read right so you have to reomve your upgrade wich can be done in the same tab you opened

It sounds like your Network Connection has been configured manually, try this!

Go to Network Connections (Its an option on the side in the Network Sharing Center) right click on your wireless device and click properties, Find Internet Protocall (TCP/IP), click properties for it set all the options there to Automatic!

Note: I think in Vista there is 2 internet protocalls (TCP/IP4) and (TCP/IP6) just change for both of them.

Does it say connected when you get to the router? If so you have the WEP or WPA correct. You may need to go into your network settings and select DHCP (automatic IP settings).

    connect to the wireless

find the LAN icon in the network connections then

right click the icon >properties > disable the firewall in one of the tabs.

    right click the icon >repair

    then enable the firewall.

I had that problem, come to find out that the port was broke (it was my ISP's fault) and they fixed it. I couldn't connect, and as soon as I finally got online it knocked me off. But my other computer was fine. They fixed it, It worked fine after that. You may also want to check your firewall. If worse comes to worse, call your computer manufacturer (if you are still under warranty)
