How can I get my website from ending with /index.htm...?

My website is http://www.(insertname).com/index.htm but I want to get rid of the /index.htm part so that it will be easier to spread around to customers and for publicity. I was thinking that I should create/use a auto-redirect but im not sure.

Update:

I try the website without the /index.htm and it gives me a "Page is under construction" message. This is normal before I uploaded the site. I type in the /index.htm and it loads the page and everything associated with it.

index.htm is what is the default page that people land on when visiting www.YourSite.com. There is no need to advertise or require your potential site visitors enter in the "index.htm" part of the site since they end up there anyway.

This is the default setting for ALL websites. Every single website on the Internet will take you to an index.(whatever) page when you enter in their web address.

The extension may be different (index.html or index.php or index.asp) but whenever you type in a web address you will ALWAYS be taken to the index page.

    Hope that helps.

Unless you have another page with the name "index", your website should automatically work without the "index.htm". Have you tried just typing in "www.(insertname).com"?

In your web hosting control panel, you can redirect the requests sent to your www.website.com to www.website.com/index.htm. In this way, users do not have to type index.htm and when they try to reach www.website.com, they will be redirected automatically to www.website.com/index.htm. Please call your web hosting company customer service for how to redirect to index.htm.
