In 1900 the top speed of a production .........?

vehicle was 53 mph. In the year 2000, the top speed was 252mph (roughly 5 times faster). So, in theory, what year will it be when we are able to travel at the speed of light?

Update:

Read the part that says..." in theory "......this is a theoretical

question, not a car question.

Update 2:

Thank you Marianne, finally an answer that makes sense!!

There are two problems with your extrapolation as stated:

    1. The difference between the speeds of terrestrial vehicles, or even current spacecraft, - and the speed of light - is positively immense. We are not even a fraction of the way there yet. So to assume that it will be done in a proportional manner doesn't make sense.

    2. None of our current methods of transportation travel fast enough to be influenced by the effects of Relativity. As far as we know, this results in the speed of light being a speed limit that cannot be reached due to some pretty basic physics. It's unfortunately not as simple as pouring the coal on until we get there. The fact is, you could pour all the energy of the universe on and still not get there. That's how the universe works.

ADDED: As a point of interest, I believe the first car to do the quarter mile in under 6 sec was a 1954 Plymouth Sedan that was launched from the deck of an aircraft carrier some time in the early 60s. The tires were burned off, and the car hit the water about a quarter mile out.

In 1968 Apollo 8 became the fastest manned vehicle ever as it reached escape velocity, 25000 mph, on its way to the moon. Production vehicles aside, if your car isn´t moving at those speeds, I´m not going to do any eyebrow raising. And lightspeed is a theoretical impossibility as it goes against the theory of relativity.

Actually and even though it is not street legal (heh), the "Thrust SSC" is the fastest "car" in the world. It set the first ever supersonic World Land Speed Record of 763.035mph on 15th October 1997, driven by Andy Green on the Black Rock Desert, Nevada. The speed of sound was exceeded on land by Andy Green and Thrust SSC for the first time in history two days earlier on 13th October 1997. It will go from 0 to 60mph in 4 seconds, and reach 600 mph is 16 seconds. It is thought to be capable of doing 850 in about 30 seconds.

Of course, we will never reach the speed of light.

You mean in 100 years the speed of cars is 5 times faster, that implies the speed of rockets will be 5 times faster in 100 years ???

That kind of reasoning is not valid.

According to Einstein's theory of relativity we will not be able to travel with the speed of light hundreds of years from now.

Actually, by your reasoning, we will never reach it. The increase of the increase of speed is slowing down. That is, the relative increase in speed has been decreasing. It now takes more horsepower to increase the speed of motor vehicles per MPH than it used to, so that you have to double the horsepower to increase the speed by 10%. To increase the speed by 10 times, we would have to increase the horsepower by 1 thousand fold.

What on earth?? Is there a production vehicle that can go 252. I know the Bugatti Veyron is the fastest production vehicle, but I didn't know that it could pass 250?? My car (2007 Corvette) can do nicely around 200...

Of course the rest of your question is a joke and I'm sure you know that, but thanks for the info...

UPDATE: Shelby Super Car is the fastest.. 257 miles per hour...

Something makes me think the next question will be : If I am 10 and you are 40 You are 4X my age in 20 years I will be 30 and you will be 60 Now you are just 2X my age . How long till we are the same age? :)
