how do i transfer files from a desktop thats a dell 3000 to a HP laptop vista?
Dont want to download everything and i dont really know much about that stuff.
The desktop is a XP if that makes a difference,got told to use a transfer cable,what is that?

There are probably a million different ways to transfer data from one home PC to another that are not connected via some network.
You can either burn the data from the source computer onto a CD / DVD or copy it to a USB drive or an external hard disk and then transfer it to the destination computer.
But there's another very simple option for transferring data between computers using the USB data cable - the cables are pretty cheap, work even with old computers and you can transfer any amount of data in one go unlike CDs or Thumb Drives where you are limited to the capacity of the drive itself.
