How do people get different sized pictures for their avatar?

I see some people have a longer picture for thier avatar not the traditional square. How do you change the format so you can post different sized pictures for avatar. I want to use my personal picture not my full avatar.

    I don't know how it happened. I have a cannon camera and I just set it without knowing really what I am doing. One of my pictures came out sideways and this one is long and upright.
