The car is a Mk 3 VW Golf gti. The central locking system works of passenger side door with key, but the drivers side door wont even unlock the door never mind unlock the central locking.
the drivers door does unlock from the passenger side (all central locking system works then) but it is just the drivers door one that is faulty.

The linkage inside the door that controls the lock assembly has come disconnected. Remove the door panel and reconnect the link rods.
If it is still connected, the electrical connection on the lock assembly needs to be replaced.

I agree that it may be the linkage. Pretty easy to fix once you know how. If you can't open the door then getting the panel off is really difficult. If you can open it then it is easy. I'm not sure whether you can open it manually.
It may also be that the central locking motor on the drivers side is broken.
In both cases if you just don't want to mess with it yourself take it to any place that does intallation of central locking.

It sounds like the live connection to the doors electrics is broken somewhere in the loom. You will need a multimeter or 12v circuit tester to find where the break in the circuit is. First test the connection from the door to the body of the car. There is a multi plug there. Disconnect it and spray some wd40 into the connections.

I think you are going to have to take the panel off the door to fix it. Sorry, Its no fun to do but there is a handy little tool you can buy to make it easier. I don't know the name but any auto parts place will.

Take it to the garage and get it fixed. Or always enter from the passenger side, climbing over the console ripping one's clothes in the process. It may be a hassle, but it may save you money that you can spend on new clothes.
