I know It does not make sense because the history of the mini is quite a story , I would like if you can see for yourself at this mini magazine in the UK, But as for your query .The Cooper is of coarse a Austin, but , but now adays BMW is the real money behind the Cooper and I am not sure if that is public knowledge,
Now i guess for marketing purposed they did not call it a BMW cooper and or a Austin cooper Right? So what I think is they Wanted to Market the Mini in its own Market without any real competitors in that type of car .

Because not many people have them and mini only makes one model, the Cooper. So there is no point in having them listed in car makes.
If you want to ask questions about them, then ask under BMW since BMW owns Mini.

BMW bought mini and has been improving it.
before BMW, mini was much smaller and not as successful as is now.
