Agent Gear's summary is really, really flawed... the best way to experience Metal Gear Solid is to just buy the essential collection and play it through, or failing that just read one of the many excellent plot summaries online. But I'll try a few-sentence summary of each game just for kicks.
MGS1: Solid Snake is sent to infiltrate the Shadow Moses nuclear weapons disposal facility, which has been captured by terrorists made up of members of Snake's former elite military unit FOXHOUND, rescue some hostages, and investigate "Metal Gear" (the name for a bipedal nuclear-equipped tank). Along the way he ends up falling in love with Meryl, the daughter of his commander, Colonel Campbell, fights an old comrade of his, Grey Fox, and his "twin brother" Liquid Snake, and eventually discovers that he was being manipulated by the government and that he was a clone created from the genetic material of Big Boss, his former commander. The main theme of the story is that your genes don't control who you are (to my understanding, but I'm probably wrong).
MGS2: Snake and his partner Otacon are now anti-metal gear activists. They infiltrate a tanker allegedly carrying a metal gear prototype developed by the Marines, on the basis of an anonymous tip, and it turns out the whole thing was a setup carried out by Revolver Ocelot (the lone surviving villain from MGS1) to eliminate Snake and set up the events later on in the game.
The next part, the main portion of the game, is about a new character named Raiden. After all plot twists are done, he's basically the puppet of a shadowy organization called the Patriots that completely control modern life, and his part of the game consists of infiltrating the Big Shell, the "cleanup facility" built overtop of the tanker crashed earlier in the game, which also houses a massive defensive facility called Arsenal Gear which exists to protect a supercomputer, GW, that regulates the flow of information to maintain the Patriot's grip on society in the digital age. Raiden's infiltration was set up to mimic the events of MGS1 to provide data for GW regarding what information to regulate and what to let go. At the end of the game, Raiden and Snake (who came in to investigate ala his previous endeavor), eventually eliminate most of the "bad guys" and discover that all 12 of the people on the Patriot's "Wisemen's Committee," it's ruling body, died early on in the 20th century, which kind of shocks them. The theme of the game is that experiences and information are just as vital as genes for continuing a species.
MGS3 is about the early life of Big Boss, Snake's former commander in FOXHOUND and his clone father, who was called Naked Snake when he was first an operative back in the '60s. It's set during the cold war. Most of the specifics of MGS3 aren't completely necessary to understand what's going on... the basics of the story, again after all the plot twists, is that Naked Snake's mentor The Boss fake-defected to the Soviet Union to covertly seize the information about where the "Philosopher's Legacy," the vast stores of money inherited by the organization that eventually became the Patriots, was located and to give this information to the US. Things got screwed up when a rogue Soviet general, Colonel Volgin, fired off a portable nuclear warhead she had as a "gift" to the Soviets; Kruschev thought the US was involved and demanded proof that they weren't, which included killing The Boss. As a result, Naked Snake eventually ended up killing his former mentor for the sake of his mission, even though they were both really on the same side. I'm pretty sure the theme of the game has something to do with this development, but I haven't thought about it that much yet. Naked Snake also took out the "Shagohod," a tank capable of firing nukes at the US through some freaky technology, killed Colonel Volgin, and did some other cool stuff throughout the course of the game.
Sound confusing? It is. Play the games for yourself.
EDIT: Mua recommended playing MGS3 first... that's a viable option, considering MGS3 is a prequel, but I'd recommend playing MGS1 first just based on the storytelling. MGS3 actually resolves a lot of plotlines from the first two games, meaning that you might get more out of it if you play it last... actually, you're going to get a lot more out of all three of the games after your first playthrough in terms of plot and thematic development, so order doesn't really matter too much.

No, you do not. The stories of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are very easy to follow and are explained in the Metal Gear Solid games, you can also just use the Metal Gear Wiki to look up their plot and read it. You can just play 1-4 and still get most of the story. Peace Walker is on the US version of the HD collection, but you can read the plot to that on the Wiki as well and still understand what will be happening in Metal Gear Solid: Groiund Zeroes. Really should play Peace Walker though, it's awesome. I recommend reading the Metal Gear Wiki as well as the MGS4 Database (if you have PS3, you can download it off of PS Store for free) but do this AFTER beating MGS 1, 2, 3, and 4.

baller seems to have it right, but you arent going to understand the game....this will all seem lik some crazy *** giberish unless you play the game for yourself. It is said that this game's story is better than movies, even books (story-wise, plot, characters, theories, morals, aspects of life, etc).
Wait, actually it IS better than many books/movies, but not better than ALL of them.
Wow, i just tried to write about MGS, but i didnt know where to start......try MGS Essential collection, its only $30.....but play MGS3 first.....i dont think u can get into the story with MGS1's gameplay....

If you dont want to buy the essential collection the only way i can sum it up is:
MGS1:
Shadow Moses
Snake kills brother(liquid snake).Ocelot loses his arm to a rogue ninja. Snake fights a series of bosses and trys to save marry(the colonels daughter) but then she dies. also its the first time snake meets with otacon and becomes friends. He stops Metal gear (a weapon)
MGS2:
After Shadow Moses Metal gears(MG) start popping up every where. snake find the U.S. MG but its stolen by Ocelot who has Liquid Snakes arm, and the tanker he was on is blown up. 2 years later a clean up factory called Big Shell is constructed where the tanker blew up. A radical group called Sons of Liberty has taken hostages on it and is threatening detonate a series of bombs placed on the Big Shell. A special unit called Fox Hound sends Raiden to try to stop them. There he meets up with Snake (unknowingly), diffuses the bombs and kills several of Dead Cell members. He finds out that underneath the Big shell is something called The Arsenal which contains a series of MG. Raiden stops it along with Solidus. In the end, the whole thing was orchestrated by The Patriots.
MGS 3:
Based in 1960. Nations are secretly developing weapons (the makings of MGs). Snake is deep in the jungle, and he tries to save a man called Sokolov who is the creator of Metal Gear. But his mentor, The Boss, takes him back and betrays her country. While in the jungle, he battles 5 enemies that are comrades of The Big Boss called The End, The Fear, The Fury, The Pain, and The Sorrow (Boss's close comrades). He loses one of his eyes by the big boss, falls in love with Eva, and together they stop the Metal Gear and Vulgan. In the end, the boss was following orders from the US to help Sokolov so they could destroy metal gear. This is when the Patriots were founded.
MGS4:
i haven't played it but really want to.
Some of the important details i left out from MGS1 because it was solen so havent played it in forever and i didn't want to mess the info up to bad.
I hope this helps
you should play the games, reading this summary won't do it justice.
P.S. if you could tell me how MGS4 turns out just find one of my Q's and sum it up if you could thanks
