2002 Dodge Grand Caravan power steering noise (see details)?

This is a strange one. Everything worked great, but one day I turned the steering wheel without turning the car on. Every since then, it has been making a growling noise when I turn left or right. What did I screw up by simply turning the wheel a little with the car off?

check the front axle boot and see if it is torn or cut, if it is damaged you may have lost all the grease out of it, if so then buy a new or rebuilt axle and everything comes complete and is a whole lot easier than trying to reseal the existing boot or putting a new boot on the axle. when the grease is gone it will due damage to the axle and sound like a click click clicking sound everytime you turn.

This is very common on these models of Caravan's(and Town & Country's) There was also a recall on the power steering hoses i believe. You will need to replace the rack and pinion and the power steering fluid filter to eliminate the noise.....they commonly go out on these.this is the procedure that is done at the dealership...but I have found that if you empty the power steering reservoir and refill it with a bottle of Lucas Power Steering stop leak and drive for awhile it may help reduce the noise.

there are numerous service bullittions on this issue and a recall on a clamp but fot the noise the service bullitn was to add a loop into the line going to the p/s cooler
