Based on experience I say Kaspersky, with its pro active defense and reg guard you will know exactly what and when an application may cause trouble to your pc(even the autorun ones).

Matter of opinion, most people will say Kaspersky based on statistics. Best free one? I'd vote for AVG myself it's what I use personally.
