There are two kinds of brick that should never be painted, one is fletton and I can't remember the other. I don't know why and have never bothered to find out because in thirty years of painting I have chosen never to paint bare brick with anything other than waterseal.

If you are covering damp, crumbling brick faces I would not bother as the paint will not stay on for long. If the bricks are sound then I would really question if you want to paint them at all. If the brick is dry but powdery then you apply a stabilising solution. If it is dry and not powdery then do not apply a stabilising solution, just apply exterior masonry paint, pref. Dulux. You might thin the first coat down a bit as a primer and work it in with a brush.

Yes but remember to use "stabiliser" on the bricks first, this binds to the brick and provides a stable undercoat for the masonry paint.

Good stabiliser and masonry paint is surprisingly expensive, from what I remember.

Just remember that after a few years it might start to look grotty and you'll have to do it again... and again....

It will look nice though. I did the same thing with a conservatory once.

You must wash the brick work with a Fungicidal Wash first of all.Use a good sealer and then two coats of Weathercote. You can spray the fungacidal wash on to the walls with a garden spray. This will stop any fungus coming through you paint.

You can purchase brick paint and if you apply two coats with one of the thick type rollers it will last for years.

That would be the most appropriate paint. The 'smooth' finish will probably be easier to work with and look better than the coarse finish. The smooth paint goes further anyway as it's not full of sand.

you dont need to use a wire brush . just use hard brush with water and brick acid , which will get any smeares of mortar off the bricks , available at any builders suppliers or b&q . were goggles / gloves . then paint with cheapest all weather paint . its as good as branded names out there

use primer first, a type of block filler... it's thicker and will fill in the little air holes in the brick. then you can use an exterior paint.

the best one is dulux weathersheild ..beware !paint does not stick on a single skin of brickwork as well as a 9inch wall
