shouldn't there be a law against smoking in cars when children are in the vehicle?
I smoke, but that is one thing that really pisses me off when I see children sitting in the back seat of a car while their parents are puffing away in the front seat!...xxx
TokeSomeBud::well it shows that there are a lot of parents out there with NO common sence at all!

I step outside to have one when I've got my kids for visitation, and in the car?... no way. I park it... and step outside... or pre plan my smoke If I gotta, like having a couple drags from the car to the store door.... then put it out, put it behind my ear like a pencil, then finish it on my way out of the store to the car again.

My dad smoked 3 packs a day around my mom, my sister and I, and that includes rides in the car, and we all survived. Why? Because it's not as harmful as hypochondriacs make it out to be. Nobody is the product of second of hand smoke. A product? Where did you come from? Wal-mart? Look at most of you? Are you dead yet? Because most of you claim that your parent(s) smoked around you in the car. But yet, here you are whining about it. So it can't be as harmful as you claim. Or you would be hooked up to breathing machines, trying to catch your last breath. That's the way you talk any way.
As for this law, how would it work? Are you going to have the police sit in every car, making sure people don't light up? You know how crazy that sounds? If by some chance it ever gets passed, the police will never enforce it. They have real criminals to catch. So stop worrying about smokers, and start worrying about child molesters and child abusers. They're the real criminals.

I agree that it's not right, however, I am from America and feel that the more and more laws there are banning people from doing this or doing that is jeopardizing the basic rights of what America used to stand for. I wouldn't smoke with kids in the car but there are far worse things parents do that are perfectly legal. America is supposed to be a free country - the last thing I want is the government having more control over my life.
Source(s): PS - my parents smoked in the car when I was a kid and I'm healthy...also, I used to sit on my mom's lap in the car ! - Anonymous1 decade ago
I don't smoke in the house because of my little boy. And while it is wrong to smoke in the car? They can't enforce the laws they have on the books like handicapped parking.

My wife and I used to smoke. We refused to smoke in any enclosed areas and force our boys to breath in our second hand smoke. We refused to smoke in the house or car after our first son was born
Some parents lack common sense, just like you said. Either that or they lack respect for their kids. But I feel as though it isn't up to our government to pass a law against it.
What can I say, you bring a child into the world you should protect them. My wife and I realized that our sons didn't ask for parents who smoked yet alone having their tiny lungs being pumped full of carcinogens. If my wife and I wanted to destroy our lungs, so be it. The boys didn't sign on that.
Time to step off my soapbox.

I have said that for years I think that should be considered child abuse or neglect. I smoke too but I always smoke outside and never in my car and when I am in public i stay away from children while I smoke and I always ask adults who are not smoking if they mind if I do I am a considerate smoker ;)

No law can control or stop it, unless and until the minds change and elders stop smoking themselves when children are inside the car.

I can see it from both sides, i think that the parents should open a window for the kids, but as a kid my grandparnts smoked in thier car with me in it and it never bothered me any most kids don't have any idea what it does to them and are probably happier not knowing

They actually just passed this law in my state, if people get caught smoking with anyone under the age of 16 in the car then you get fined.
