Lower back problem.......?

......I have been having pain for 2 years now (35 yo female). I was taken to the hospital twice because I was unable to move without pain. I was given musle relaxers and dilauded. I know get pain on the left and right side that radiates down my buttocks. The pain gets worse when sitting at computer for work or standing in one place (also it gets inflammed). Walking is not great either. I've gained 25 lbs from my inactivity. I do the stretches and get adjustments. Does this sound familiar to anyone? What is it? Treatment?

Yes that sounds familiar. You really need to go to an orthopaedic doctor and have an MRI done to determine what is causing your pain. There is a reason. Chiropractic adjustments helped me temporarily, but you need to diagnose the cause. What I eventually had to have done was a nerve block! I am a totally different person now. You may not need that, the reason I did is due to degenerating spine. I am 51. A MRI is a must as soon as possible.

VERY FAMILIAR!! You may have a bulging disc pressing on a nerve. As your body tries to protect it, your back muscles go into spasm causing the "I can't move at all" pain you feel. You need to get an MRI done so they can see your spine up close. I'm 32 and 8 years ago I woke up one day with pain down my legs and it turned out to be that. I went to physical therapy and and was on lots of drugs and injections. If you do find out that is what is wrong be sure to know what you are putting in your body. I gained 100 lbs from steroid injections that were supposed to stop the inflammation of the nerve. Once I went to a new Dr., I got off of all the meds and started a good physical therapy program ( and watched my activity at home) and it got SO much better.

However now, I've started having the pain again, but not constantly. I went for another MRI and now they say there is no bulging disc but significant Degenerative Disc Disease (a break down disc material). As the spine becomes unstable it can press a nerve temporarily and cause the same pain. I get rid of it with Ibuprofen, therapy exercises that I learned and rest. The bottom line is get the MRI. It is the only way they can help with your pain. I feel for you. Good luck

You should check this sciatica natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info/

Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication

I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.

I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

    So..

Though sciatica is a common problem, it is really surprising that often it is hard to tell why a person suffers from this ailment. This is why it is often referred to as a back pain complex. Even experienced doctors find it difficult to pinpoint a cause. Number of medical conditions lead to sciatica such as stress and trauma at any point on spinal cord or lower back. This is understandable but when a person feels this pain and the underlying causes are as general as obesity or pregnancy, it presents a vague picture to the doctor. There can be many more underlying causes that require supervision and treatment at the right time.

Sciatica is the radiating pain from the sciatic nerve the longest nerve in the body that goes from back down buttocks & leg.

It is often caused by a herniated or bulging disc where the soft stuff between the disc deteriorates or bulges out from disc. It can also be caused by spinal stenosis of lumbar back were the central canal of the spine narrows & compresses the nerve causing pain.

Hot or cold, whichever feels better to you.

    Physical therapy.

    Tai Chi

Acupuncture: I had sciatica & had acupuncture 2-3X/wk for 2 1/2 months & haven't had it since (9 years!) I do have spinal stenosis in my lumbar spine L4-L5. Found thru a MRI.

    Analgesics, NSAIDs for inflammation.

Take collagen, Calcium citrate 500mg 4X/day WITH Vit. D3 600mg.

    Google: mayo clinic>>diseases>>sciatica

    Feel better soon
