Depends on the output power, type (A/B/G/N) and brand... But typically it is 100-300 meters without blockage. Indoors, expect about 50 meters.

You can buy special high-powered WAPs.

It depends what class it is. The typical standards at the moment are B and G, but N is starting to come in

A B class wireless router has a typical range of ~38 Meters indoors, the G is the same but it has more data through put.

The new N class routers have a range of ~70 Meters indoors and up to 250 outdoors and also has an incredible data rate, although at the moment they are a little more pricey, You also have to take into account the number of walls, and how far your going to be operating away from the router, the further you are, the weaker your internet connection is going to be.

There is also a new class coming out called Y which will be used in city centres, etc. which has a weak range indoors, but outdoors has a range of ~5000 metres. Pretty impressive if i do say so myself.

in case you want an on the spot cyber web connection, the router desires linked to a broadband modem (DSL or cable). the only time it would plug at as quickly as right into a telephone line could be whether it particularly is a blend router/DSL modem. a solid router might circulate a pair hundred ft in outside. shape, partitions, domicile windows and such, can influence distance.

In an open field--several hundred feet. Indoors, not nearly as far. The WiFi signal is not very strong and can be blocked by anything metal or radio signals on the same frequency (2.4ghz--like cordless phones).

200 feet on most routers. Some are made for larger homes or areas and they are like 300 feet I think.
