What's the best brand for a laptop?

I hear that Sony Vaios are good. Is there a brand that's better quality?

Asus C90S! First laptop to have an upgradeable, changeable processor! First laptop to use a DESKTOP style processor! Has support for an Intel Core2 Duo Extreme Edition 2.93! (That’s two processors running at 2.93GHz on a single die with a 4MB Cache, and a 1066MHz FSB! X6800) First laptop to have an upgradeable, changeable graphics card. That’s right! I said graphics card, not soldered to the motherboard integrated, or Onboard graphics. This time if you get tired of the graphics, you’ll be able to upgrade it. As of this writing the top graphics card built for this laptop is an Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB’s of DDR2 ram. Asus has announced plans for better graphics cards, and rumour has it that the 8800 series is being looked at. (Hmmm, GeForce 8800GTX? That’d be sweet!) The C90S supports up to 3GB’s of DDR2 ram at 667MHz, (PC-2 5300, or PC5400) You can only buy the laptop in a ‘barebones’ configuration. The ‘barebones’ configuration is, you have to install processor, ram, harddrive, and graphics card. This way you can make it fit your budget/needs now, and upgrade later. Unlike other laptops where you get what you can afford, and you’re stuck with it until you buy a new/better one. The’ barebones’ comes with a 15.4 inch ColorShine Glossy Screen,(WSXGA 1680 x 1050 LCD), and has a built-in 2.0 megapixel webcam, (top, middle of the LCD frame), that swivels, and has Face Tracking Feature. Has a large Touchpad, with FingerPrint Reader. Has a HDMI port, an E-Sata port,(External Sata port), 3 USB 2.0 ports, IEEE 1394 Firewire port, 8 in 1 Card Reader,(SD/Mini-SD/MMC/XD/MS/MS-Pro/MS-Duo/MS-Pro-Duo), Lan port,(10/100/1000 Mbps), Built-in Bluetooth,(2.0+HDR), TV Out port, VGA out port, DVD-RW 8x Dual Layer SuperMulti Dvd/Cd burner. The list just goes on. You remove a large panel off the bottom to access the processor, ram, harddrive, and graphics card. 9 screws I believe. Hard to do? Watch this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPrw89QIXic Here’s a review on a forum that shows large photos of the Asus C90S, and it’s features. Has info too. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=1... (Pretty Smoooth lookin’ laptop!) Expensive? See what you think. I found the ‘barebones’ online for $689.99,(Why don’t they just go ahead, and say $690 bucks!) http://computers.pricegrabber.com/barebone-systems...

    Spec’s from Asus.com http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?modelmenu=2&mode...

I did a build at Directron.com on March 15th, 2008, while they still had the Asus C90S ‘barebones’ available,( as of March 30th they said they were out, and getting more was pending) Their ‘barebones’ was $730.00 I added a Core2 Duo E6600,(Two cores runnin’ at 2.40, with a 4MB cache, and 1066FSB). 2GB’s of DDR2 667MHz ram, a 320GB Sata harddrive, and WinXP Pro. Then went to their vid card page, and added the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT with 512MB’s of DDR2 ram. Came to $1475.96 I think with shopping around, and a different Core2 Duo you could drop the price down a lot.

My parents had a Sony Viao desktop and it was not a good computer. They had all sorts of problems with it and had it serviced 2 or 3 times and never did get it to run right. But that was a desktop. I have a 4 year old Gateway that runs great-never had one problem with it. My daughter has an HP that is about 1 year old and she loves it. The only thing she really does not like about it is that it runs VISTA. She wishes she would have gone with XP, but other than that, its great.

For the most part these days they are all pretty equivalent. In my professional opinion vaios are greatly over priced for what you get. Toshiba's and HP's are better average priced machines. Really when it comes down to it most all available laptops are made by a handful of companies in taiwan/hong kong anyway.

The Vaio range is good, so is Toshibas Satellite Pro, Dells XPS and Insprion and HPs Pavillion.

For $1500 you get a alot from ASUS - great value and awesome performance and reliability.

    This is a great deal

12.1" screen (really small) - but portable and great battery; the price is awesome too - $1300 and has 9300mGS (dedicated 256MB not shared), HDMI, fingerprint, 802.11n and weighs 4.2 w/ battery.

This one is even better and under $1500 - 14.1" screen, T9300 CPU!!!, 320GB!!!!, 3GB, 9500m GT GPU, HDMI, fingerprint, 802.11n

I'd really recommend this one. THe size is perfect and the price is unbeatable. I'd recommend a 14.1" over a 15.4"

Of course, the Macbook (not Pro) is a great deal now that they have 2GB RAM and X3100 video. THe one for $1300 is the best deal with a $100 upgrade to 250GB (offered by the apple website) makes it the same as the black edition but $100 less.

HP or Sony trust me on this. They are built with quality and last. Through dropping on the floor by accident, or spilling stuff on them. Dude, don't do Dell. Nice notebooks at Dell, but low grade quality.
