Should semi truck drivers get a discount on diesel fuel?

The increased gas prices have let to increased food items due to transportation costs. Do you think that truckers should be given a huge discount on fuel in order to help keep food costs down for the rest of us?

YES YES YES!!!!, we're going broke out there. Trucks cost a fortune to own and operate, mine costs 1,600 bucks a month in payments alone, not including insurance, plates, permits, registration, taxes and maintenance, now you go doubling the fuel cost and I've got a problem.

To stay in business we have to raise our prices, this means the company's that use us have to charge more for their products. The end result is YOU the consumer are going to pay more out of your pocket. You need to remember, just about anything you buy rolls in a truck somewhere between the manufacturer and the store.

Yes, I think they should have a discount but it probably wouldn't be a huge one - just enough to help them out. The prices are so high that the independent truckers are having a really tough time breaking even now. The high prices are the hardest on them, even though they are too high for us all.

I think you've got something there. Instead of subsidizing this and giving tax breaks to rich and helping people that got loans for their houses they can't afford, it makes sense to give them a break.

Nobody realizes how hard it is to drive those trucks, myself included. They leave all this space between them and the car in front of them so they don't kill anyone, then some asswipe cuts them off. Sure, there are some assholes, but it's probably because they've been driving for hours witnessing bad drivers and they're really bored and tired but have to stay alert. No trucker's speed, either, haha.

Source(s): PS To everyone complaining saying they want low prices, too, boo hoo. Driving isn't a right. This country needs to get off it's fat ass and walk, ride a bike, carpool, scooter, public transit., employers... if it gets bad enough, you will use other means of transportation. I have no pity for single drivers with the A/C and stereo on complaining about the price of gas. Sell one of your designer purses or something. Mommy and Daddy pay for your gas, anyway. Unless it's absolutely neccessary, like the electrian contractor, etc, they should get some sort of gasoline tax write off.

The truckers, I am assuming, get reimbursed. So what we would really be doing is giving big business a break on the gas prices....At this point I'm not sure that that would be a such a bad idea. My food bill (3 boys) has gone through the roof!

Most places get a fuel surcharge included in the freight. Whether they pass it on the owner operators that are leased with them, is another story. If you are an independent, the broker may try to steal the surcharge from you. This, of course, doesn't help the price of the delivered product. Start petitioning for the U.S. oil reserves to be released, that will help.

Sounds good. But semi customers probably constitute at least 90 percent of the customers for deisel fuel. So it isn't likely that the oil companies are going to do it for everyone but ten percent. They may as well just reduce the price of it. But you know that won't happen, not with the price of a barrel of oil on the rise.

The government should pay half the fuel costs or come up with some kind of discount plan or the cost of everything is going to skyrocket.

Government should step up and do something soon to alleviate the gas problem of high fuel prices. I don't know about giving discounts.

What about the rest of the people that have to drive a lot to work? I know that my father spends a good portion of his day driving from job to job as an electrical contractor, and he ends up having to refill his tank a couple of times a week. And that's just one of the jobs that needs a lot of gas. So, if you start giving out discounts for one job, where do you draw the line as to who gets what discount? And where do you think the discounts come from? The government? And where do they get their money? Yup, that's right, the tax money you and I pay. So it would end up with everyone paying for everyone else's gas. And that would suck for those of us that get good MPG, having to pay for the gas guzzling trucks and such.

Also, I'm pretty sure they get reimbursed at least somewhat, in most companies anyway.

we are all getting ripped off. The oil co.'s have made record

PROFITS since 2002. I think Independent truck drivers should, they are just being put out of business methodically, like Walmart did all the mom and pop shops., and the gov helped back in the day for Corporations to take out farmers.
