Civil war looming in Zimbabwe?

Sigh.... late news....Mugabe vows to fight on. I am really deflated by this, does this mean a civil war in Zimbabwe is looming, cf. Kenya. Why don't the UN intervene now!!! Well, we know why don't we. I warned people not to count their chickens.... I fear I was right....unlike some on these threads I do not "gloat" about such failings. What do you guys think? Civil war looming? International or South African intervention?

PS. I really think our government should move in now before we have a civil war on our borders.

Update:

Odie- disappointed with who? Mugabe or our government. I must admit if I were Mugabe I would do the same. How long would my life be worth once no longer president and with backing? The ZANU FP know what is coming to them if they lose power. I think the only answer is SADC intervention. Please President Mbeki, if you read these threads please listen to those who only have the best interests of the poor innocent people of Zimbawe at heart!

Update 2:

Zim...BBC news, they have started arresting members of the opposition in Harare tonight, I am listening to it now on TV. Re civil war, not from Mugabe so much as against him....like Kenya.

Update 3:

Che Guevara was not responsible for any civil wayrs. Che Guevara would have openly declared his hatred of someone like Mugabe and would have built up a rebel arm against him. Che Guevara was struggling against the evil Yankee backed "Mugabes" if South America at the time. Come on, odie- answer the question........... Anyway, Che died in 1967 and this is 2008......

    Desmond Tutu is 100% correct.

The fact that Mbeki's government continues to support this petty, tyrannical dictator in Zimbabwe is an insult to everything anti-apartheid activism stood for. The ANC stooges should be ashamed of themselves.

The people of Zimbabwe have spoken, and they want change. In fact, they've been screaming for change since Mugabe stole the last election in 2002. And yet, South Africa continues to side with the oppressor.

South Africa -- "Freedom for us, but not for you."

the Man Mugasbe is a monster. He will do anything to stay in power, includeing using votes of people long dead. I was there this time last year. Yesterday, I could not get a Text message through. Journalists have been arrested, CNN and SKY are banned from Broadcasting. The opposition leader has had his offices ransacked.

Bush is carrying on his business as usual, as if Zimbabwe is not there.

What else is happening? Do we really know.

There are two answers. One, Zimbabwe has Civil War, and destabilises Africa even more, not to mention the detremental effect it will have on South Africa.

Two. The International Community INCLUDING MBEKI (the whoose), steps in now, takes a stand and gets Mgabe out of the country, along with his close cronies, to the International Court in The Hague, and invite the whites to go and help get the country back on it's feet.

Umm.. I have only heard that foreign journalists were arrested. They did not mention opposition members. (not that I am disagreeing with you) The German news continues reporting that rumours say he has left the country. They did not mention anything about 'Mugabe vows to fight on'

They also mention a bomb attack on a government candidate in Bulawayo.

It is frustrating. You seem to get more info there than we do.

A civil war might be in the cards but the people have been intimidated for so many years, that they may surrender helplessly…as in the past.

Oh, and I agree, it is an outright disgrace to use the name Che and Mugabe in the same sentence! What nerve!

Edit:- It finally featured. 'Mugabe is prepared to fight' I could scream blue murder. Although we were expecting it, everybody still held thumbs.

Zimbabwe is just the tip of the iceberg of what is happening in Africa today.

A civil war? Of course there is a civil war in that country. The war hasn't started with the elections and the victory of the opposition. The war started in the moment when Mugabe came to power and began torturing his own people. What is going on today is just the final drop of years of suffering, hunger and coruption. And this war won't stop till Mugabe is killed.

But I am affraid that after Mugabe a new one will emerged and the circle will began again. Just things in Africa follow the same way since they got their freedom - rebelion, then hunger and war, a new leader comes to rule them and again hunger and again war.

I don't know where this will end.

Why since when was the British Army going to Zimbabwe or did you dream it..... If you were my grown up kid say 40 years old would you like me to wipe your nose and make sure you washed your face everyday, NO I don't think you would.. Rhodesia wanted Independence from Great Britain 40 years ago and they got it... But I will say this Zimbabwe has a very rich neighbour with a very good Army maybe they should pull their finger out and help their fellow Africans..

    I agree with you MJ.

I have been watching it and am now watching Question Time on BBC 1

Zimbabwe has been far to quite over the few days. My family say in some towns it's dead - no one around.

I'm afraid and fear that civil war is looming.

Like someone just said on TV. South Africa has done nothing along with other surrounding countries.

If there was oil in Zim they would not even hesitate to intervene!!

the south african government must help ,together with the news media to inspire the 2million or more zimbabweans to return to help the M.D.C to take complete power to push mugabe out, otherwise they must keep on suffering in south africa.between 2 to 3 million of the oposition is in south africa, they must not wait for mugabe to be defeated before they return, they must be part of the freedom pressure group .morgan tsvangirai cant fight alone.

Agreed, Mugabe is a maniac and everyone knows it. Mentally unstable, he might have been a great man is time, but his time is up. time to retire. Step in, keep the peace, let the new ruling party try pull the country together.

What ever happened to quiet diplomacy? I'm disappointed MJ.

    EDIT:

Wasn't Che responsible for a few civil wars? Isn't this a good thing? I think you may have double standards MJ. Wouldn't a MDC victory mean a return of those Capitalist suppressors?
