Start at catcher on your mlb fantasy team?

Mauer.

Even though Varitek is a great player, he is a horrible fantasy player. He doesn't do one thing very well, and that is what makes him bad. His average might be the highest, but he won't hit a lot of hrs, drive in a ton of runs, or get a lot of runs scored. He is a great everyday player in the MLB, but for fantasy, he isn't so hot.

Mauer can do a bit of everything and its nice. Usually his average is the highest, at that's around .320 or so. Also he has the power to hit 25+ HRS and drive in 120+ runs this year with Hunter gone. Him batting in the #2 hole might take away some of those advantages, but Gomez ahead of him is a huge table setter.

Also Mauer is on average going in the 3rd to 5th round in drafts, as where Varitek is slipping all the way to the 10th if not farther.

I would easily go with Mauer.

Mauer - Varitek is a good backup if Mauer gets hurt, but you're almost definitely going to get the best numbers out of Mauer.
