Volvo S40 1.9L Turbo 4 cyl or 2.4L 5cyl fuel type?

I am interested in the S40 as an entry level relatively inexpensive sedan and notice the model change @ 2003/2004 models. Fuel economy and reliability are important to me. I think a 1.9L turbo will certainly require premium 93 octane fuel is it the same for 2.4L 5cyl engine as well. Please tell me your experience with these make/model(s).

Volvo recommends at least 90 octane in all their cars, but I have run 87 in my 2003 S80 since it was a year old with no issues. I just got sick of buying premium every time I filled up. I dropped from 19.2mpg to 18.8mpg, but I am saving around $.20/gallon on fuel. I didn't notice any difference in performance either.
