In China, the people don't speak English, except in major cities and even then, sometimes its hard to find.

The Philippines, many people speak English.

Apply for a visa at the Chinese embassy in your country. Very easy to get.

I would suggest a tour group for China for the first time.

If the UK has the same visa requirements for the Philippines as the USA, all you have to do is go there. Visa's are automatically given to USA citizens.

In the USA, a Chinese visa takes about a week to get. The Philippines it is instantaneous.

Look on the internet for both embassies in your country. It will have all the information.

Also, the Philippines I consider a dangerous country, especially in the south where there has been a long term insurrection against the government by Muslims because the bigotry by the government and the people towards them. Plus, the Philippines is a very corrupt country. It seems everyone is on the take and government officials will openly demand more money and higher fees. I love the Philippine people, but I don't trust them much.

China is a very safe country. However, like any emerging economy, when people see you coming they'll try to charge you more money.

While it seems I have contradicted myself somewhat, in the Philippines, corruption is in your face, whereas in China it is more subtle. Corruption in China carries big fines and punishments now, the Philippines, it is a way of life.

Source, I have been to both countries multiple times, and now live in China as an ex pat from the USA.

it is best that you travel with somebody you know or why not join a tour group from your end. I believe it will be a rewarding experience too.
