I agree, do not go to a large box store to purchase plants UNLESS you know what types will grow and not require lots of attention. Some plants spread rapidly and become a nuisance.
I suggest starting with a mix of annuals and perenials. And slowly add more perenials.
The website below has information on a pet friendly yard and plants.

You live in a big state with two big parts to it. We need more info. Are you a yooper? Or do you live in the bottom half? In the thumb, the middle, or the Lake Michigan side?
OK, as an ex Grand Haven resident, you can plant hostas, cyclamen, astilbe in the shade, pansies, petunias, snapdragons in the sun. Go to a nursery near you. You will find everything you need.

michigan has 4 zones for plants. it will greatly depend on what area you are in. your local garden center will gladly point out what you can grow or make suggestions for you. DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT go to places like wal-mart, kmart. lowes, home depot. they do not have plant savy people there, like they do at a real garden or landscaping center. look in yellow pages.

interior the solar i'd plant grape tomotatoes b/c they are so yummy and that they do no longer take continuously to strengthen. Roses are purely wonderful to strengthen in finished solar. impatients in partial shade. Lettice for the bunnies.
