Most probably, little or no parental, meaningful set of values to relate to as guidelines: no set of morals to instill in their children, as values to grow up by.
I think that it's primarily the result of our incredible economic success as a nation: everything thing is measured by the dollar; spiritual value has no meaning in the market-place.
Our generation has come to be know as the "me" generation; everyone is out for themselves only.

I think their negative self perception comes from the bondage of living in the past of their parents unresolved issues of the world. Most youth are trapped in the past, and not allowed to find their own idenity because of the ways there parents was raised. My heart really goes out to the youths of today, this is the 21st century and most of them are trapped in the 18th century and not allowed to come of era. " Shame on these parents that think there kids are suppose to carry their negative perceptions into the 22th century,.

I think it stems from the fact that no one teaches our youth today the concept of Unconditional Self Acceptance which means to accept all your strengths equally with all of your faults. Our kids don't fully accept themselves as people.

They are too busy comparing themselves to the people they see in movies and on TV that are perfect in every way.
They never bother to learn about themselves and their talents and just copy what they see.
I definitely think that there are many healthy self-confident young people out there, though. It all depends on their family, education and training.
