How can I change my modem's USB connection to a ethernet connection?

I'm trying to get up a wireless network for my house. Right now my modem is hooked up to my computer using a UBS connection. The install guide I have for the router is based on an ethernet connection between the modem and computer. I plugged the ethernet cable between the modem and computer, turned the power off for the modem and then turned it back on, but the ethernet connection wasn't established. What can I do? Thanks

Update:

I have Vista

    About Vista - I'm sorry

As far as getting the modem and the computer to talk:

    1. Do you have the correct cable? Many modems expect to be connected to a router, not directly to a computer. If you connect a modem to a router, you use a PATCH cord. Connecting the modem directly to the computer may require a CROSSOVER cord.

    2. Can you ping the modem? check the manual for the modem and find out what it's default IP address is. Then ping it.

    3. Does the modem automatically assign IP addresses? You may have to assign a fixed IP address to your Ethernet card to directly connect.

We really need to know the model # and manufacturer of the modem to be of more help

    Good Luck

PS - Consider an UPGRADE to XP

Remove the USB cable and reboot your Modem (and PC), it's just confused.
