"Timbre" (said "TAM-ber", for some bizarre reason) is a reference to the sound of each instrument. Instrumentally, "Imagine" features Lennon's vocals, piano, drum kit, bass, and strings.
The specific words you would use to describe them individually or in combination is a fairly subjective thing to do. I'm not sure whether you're trying to describe them as a whole (fairly airy, etc.), each particular instrument (the piano sounds fairly woody to my ears), or how each different instrument sounds different than it might ordinarily (i.e., Lennon's voice is more nasally than your average voice).
Hope that helps; happy listening!
