When Americans want such a product.

With rampant inflation and plummeting dollar and more competition for remaining oil, that should be soon.

unquestionably it is the marketplace not Obama wanting manufacturers to make gasoline efficient autos. efficient businesses are conscious what human beings want and what they purchase are 2 completely diverse issues. i want a Lamborghini yet i'm coming domicile with a Toyota or Honda. that is a theory GM did not carry close judging by skill of all the truck flowers they outfitted that they are at the moment remaining. word Honda and Toyota had gasoline efficient autos waiting at the same time as gasoline expenses rose and they are operational. for sure it is accessible because 2 authentic global examples are taking position the line as I form this. Obama isn't letting GM keep the Hummer and GM had way too many manufacturers besides. what percentage vehicle lines do Toyota and Honda have? Corolla and Camry, Accord and Civic. what percentage did GM have?

supply and demand. sorry to say but most americans want big gas guzzling powerful cars. if people want it they'll make it. it you notice in europe most of their cars are [sub]compact on my way to work(ft worth tx) on the highway i am surrounded by trucks and suvs with only one person in them. what a waste!!!

a lot of american companies produce more fuel efficient cars elsewhere where the market for it is better like ford made a diesel focus but only in europe.

however some american car companies are making more efficient cars not anyway: like the chevy volt

I don't believe it is the manufacturers. They will produce what most of us want. Seems most want big, powerful, very safe cars. We have a different lifestyle. We tend to drive much further. Driving from one city to another is like driving from one country to another in Europe or japan.

It is also my understanding that many of the very nice small cars in Europe that get such good mileage will not pass our emissions standards. I would love to have one of those VW Polo's that get over 50 MPG, but they don't import them. Seems strange, I must pollute more because of our emissions regulations?? I guess our "Environmentalists" got it wrong again.

When the Brainectomies which appear to be standard issue on most American Executives are reversed and these guys get rid of their five second foresight and start looking to the welfare of the corporations they are supposed to be watching over, rather than taking care of themselves at the expense of everybody else. Or when the Japanese companies (who produce more of their car's content in the US than the so-called US companies, by the way) buy out the US companies.

Look at Yahoo in Germany or France. For years GM and Ford has made small diesels that get 70 mpg.But they feel no one here would buy them.Slow takeoff, but over 100mph.

    I want one.

As soon as NASCAR has a MPG or lower gas limit! Then Toyota would dominate... for a few years anyway.

My chevy gets almost 10 mpg better then my VW beetle, go figure. My Malibu has a bigger motor, better mpg, 2X as fast as my VW beetle, but the bug is 100x better looking.

The US is rubbish at making cars, always has been. It will never really be able to compete with europe or asia. In the UK we have a car programme called top gear and the US card are always rubbish, they are old fashioned in style and are very tacky and plastic compared to european cars. The leader will always be germany.
