What is the difference between your favorite albums and the best albums?

I see a lot of people saying things along the lines of "The greatest album of all time is ________, but my favorite album is ________." My own personal example is: Digital Underground - Sex Packets is in my list of my 10 favorite albums, but I would never say it's one of the 10 greatest albums ever. A list of my favorite albums and a list of what I think are the best albums would be very similar, but there would be some discrepancies. I can't explain why though. It seems logical that those lists should be exactly the same. If you do the same thing, can you give a reasonable explanation as to why you think that way?

    Favorite Answer

    top 5 favs;

    atmosphere-godlovesugly

    blu & exile- below the heavens

    brother ali- the undisputed truth

    nas- illmatic

    felt- a tribute to lisa bonet (in that order)

    top 5 best;

    nas-illmatic

    eric b and rakim- paid in full

    jay z- reasonable doubt

    biggie- ready to die

    gza- liquid swords

    you favorite albums are based on how the artist's music effects you as a person, which is based on similar experiences, emotions, etc. the best albums are based more (sometimes solely) on skill.

    Kudos....I've been wanting to ask this question, but with rappers...

    To be honest, I couldn't tell you the difference...just a matter of personal taste is all. Thing is though, that most people do have albums that are nonetheless considered to be great albums by the majority, so the difference between the two really does come down to personal taste.

    It does seem logical that those lists should be exactly the same

    My favorite 5 albums:

    Illmatic

    Blackstar

    Paid in Full

    Midnight Marauders

    Typical Cats

    The 5 I think are the greatest:

    It takes a Nation of Millions

    Raising Hell

    Paid in Full

    Illmatic

    Ready to Die

    *Both lists subject to change*

  • I think for me, my favourite albums are just ones I love the vibe of. Ones I can put on and they make me happy. I don't really analyze them any further than that.

    But if I'm talking with someone about top _ lists, then I will be a bit more analytical about what albums deserve to be on there. So I do take things like longevity, impact, influence etc into account - which i don't do with my personal faves because there's no need. My love for those albums is just a personal thing. I wouldn't feel like I was "cheating" another album out of a place on any list by calling those ones my favourites.

    14 track is certainly an "album" - 4 to maybe 6 tracks used to be an "E-P", for Extended-Play, which was more than a Single, but certainly less than an LP. LP is an old term meaning Long-Playing (record) from the old days of vinyl. A CD can be an "album", but is NOT an LP, whereas a vinyl LP = an "album". Got that ;-) ?

    Alot of the best albums came out when I was too young to understand, and the sound in hip hop has changed alot... so i have an easier time relating to a 2008 album then i would a 1988 album.

    I know what you mean, but there is NO difference between my favorite album and the best-selling albums. My favorite albums are some of Tupac's best albums like his greatest hits albums and such and they are also the best-selling albums. My favorite rapper (Tupac) is also THE best rapper (statistically at least).

    nothing to me. Greatest>Favorites is some politically correct garbage. Favorites=Greatest. Invalidate my own opinion, No Never.

    I think that its because at the end of the day everbody has there own opinions on what kind of music they like. And just because some magazine made a list of what they think is classic, doesn't mean its gonna be identical to what your list would look like.
