College or year off to work?
Well, I just got the news that my first choice college didn't accept me. It sucks, because I never planned what to do if this happened. So now I have to THINK about it.
I also got into UConn, a state U, and Salve Regina in RI. I don't really feel too attracted to either of them right now- UConn because it has a rep as a party school (and it's huge, 20,000 students!) and Salve because it seems too conservative to do much *ahem* experimenting.
I could also take a year off, stay at home, get a job and apply elsewhere then. I'm really hoping to find at least slightly meaningful work if I did this, not just bagging at the grocery store.
If I went to UConn for a year like my friend and then applied elsewhere to transfer, I worry that I'll be essentially wasting a year of college. However, I'm also worried about not going and not finding a good job.
What's your advice? Go to the party school and transfer? Go to the small one and risk being stifled? Or get a job and wait?

Think about it..... if you take a year off, you have to APPLY all over again to every school... you have to re-do recommnedations (extremly hard to do when you aren't in any classes to ask current professors), and then you have to explain to EVERY school why you took a break....
Have you thought about the fact that a BIG college has more opportunities? I couldn't stand a small college, because once you've done everything, you've got nothing left to do. A Big college always has something new and exciting going on.
In my opinion, you should use your opportunity to go to college RIGHT away... don't waste a year. If you're worried about transfering, then look up the requirements to get into your First choice college and stay at your "2nd choice" college until you've met ALL of them. That MIGHT mean you'll have to stick it out for 2 years at your "2nd choice" instead of just one, but in the end it'll be worth it, because you'll be at your 1st choice college, with NO time wasted, and get the degree from there!
Don't worry about it being a "Party" school..if you really are hitting the books, and keep yourself motivated on your studies, you won't even NOTICE the parties and the outrageous party atmosphere that distracts most people. If you don't want to get caught up in parties, then DON"T. No one requires you to party and drink every night. It's ENTIRELY your choice... so if you don't want it, it WON"T bother you!!
Go to UConn.... Make the best of it... live it up, be a transfer to your "1st choice"... and make the best of it there!!!
Good luck!

I am about to graduate from a bit of a party type school. In fact, those living on campus, as I did for two years, can walk to either of the major bar districts in town from the university. While most of the people in my dorms partied from Thursday night on, I have never gone and have found many friends that don't do the party scene to hang out with. It's the friends you make and the life style you live that affects how you will perform not the type of college. Every school will have people who party and people who don't. If you're only fear about UConn is it is a party school, don't let that stop you.

Don't take a whole year off, apply and start school in the summer.
I wouldn't want to take a year off, so maybe try UConn see if you like it, get really good grades, don't party and transfer to your dream school.

if you take a year off and don't do something substantive you still won't get in...if you go to a party school and do poorly, ie .less than 3.5 you won't get in....If you go to U.conn and get a 3.5 you can transfer all of your course work so the year won't be a waste....having taught at a new england party school for 30 years...serious students don't party that much and tend to do very well. and go on to better things..it is your choice to party...

Don't wait. Everyone i know that does this regrets it later. Usually, after they have gotten pregnant by some looser unemployed boyfriend they met bagging groceries. Go to college, any college, then transfer in after a semester or two.

I think you should do what ever the hell you want. Really you've already made up your mind and simply ask the internet masses for a backing you'll probably not getting.
So you don't like your school choices? Don't go to school.
You don't need college, just makes stuff easier
