How do you do an American accent?
I have answered many questions on here about how to do a British accent, and my answer has always been: which one?
My question to all you non-American English-speaking actors is: how do you do an American accent?
Do you go for Southern drawl, Midwestern twang, New England "ayuh", California "dudespeak", Brooklyn "yo" , Texas, Baltimore, Chicago, Philly, Miami, Cowboy, or what?
What, to your ear, is an American accent?
I was asking non-American actors, but thank you all for your replies.

The "Mid Western" accent is usually considered "Standard American", though as you indicated, if you ask for an "American accent" the answer is "which one?". They are very diverse. I'm from Baltimore. We're known for our pinched, very pronounced "o's".

Watch a movie or T.V. series like Friends,The simple life etc. Things that are filmed in America and copy their accent sense they are American, and you might sound American.

I live in america, but i hear my accent and others and know which one most actors speak in. Try california, but not dudespeak.

It really depends on the character. I would work on getting a typical "news caster" accent that doesn't sound exactly like any place because then you can mold it for each character.

I'm sure people in other countries think Americans all sound like they're from the South or rural areas.
