A projectile of mass 1.250 kg is shot straight up with an initial speed of 12.0 m/s.
(a) How high would it go if there were no air friction?
(b) If the projectile rises to a maximum height of only 4.4 m, determine the magnitude of the average force due to air resistance.

v² = u² + 2ad
u = 0 (works the same upwards as downwards)
so v² = 2ad
144 = 2 * 9.8 * d
d = 7.35 metres
(note that the mass is irrelevant in this calculation)
(b)
144 = 2 * a * 4.4
16.4 = a
F = m * a
F = 1.250 * 16.4 = 20.5 Newtons.
Force due to gravity alone = 1.250 * 9.8 = 12.25 Newtons
Therefore force due to air resistance = 8.2 Newtons.
