What beans are good to use in a chili recipe?

I'm planning on making chili in the crockpot and am just wondering what kinds of beans are good to use in chili and if anyone has any good recipes.

In my opinion, there are many different beans that could be used and even combined, but I'm not really sure what the best kinds together are. Is there such a thing as having too many different kinds together in one chili recipe?

Thanks! :)

No. I have some amazing styles of chili that I make, and they all have multiple types of beans in them. Kidney beans are good because they stay firm no matter how long you cook them. Pinto beans are good because they absorb all the flavors well.

Surprisingly enough, I would not recommend chili beans,(they are not named after "chili" the dish,)they are nothing special, and have a bitter taste, which can be a sore spot in any chili or stew dish,(trust me!) I also highly recommend butter beans, They are soft, and also absorb a lot of flavor.

Chili con carne actually means peppers with meat and a true chili connoisseur wouldn't go near beans when they're making chili BUT I like to boost the fibre, flavour and volume by adding red kidney beans, pinto beans, garbanzo beans (chick peas) and any other beans I can get my hands on when I make chili.

I like to slow cook my chili too. I have used all sorts of beans in it, whatever I have on hand I throw in. Pinto beans and kidney beans seem to be the favorite. But I have also tried black beans, and that gave it a nice taste. Go with what you like or what is on sale that week. For my chili, sometimes I slow cook some roast the day before and we have that for one meal, then I take the leftover beef and cut that up small and throw it in the crockpot and make chili. that way you can use leftovers. I also like using a can of spaghetti sauce in it, gives it a yummy taste. Chili is all about personal perference, just add what you like.

Here's my recipe that includes five kinds of beans. I don't use a crockpot, but I'm sure it is easily converted.

    FIVE BEAN CHILI

    1 1/2 pounds ground beef

    1 large yellow onion, diced

    1 green bell pepper, diced

    3 teaspoons liquid smoke

1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed

1 (15 ounce) can great northern beans, drained and rinsed

1 (15 ounce) can black eyed peas, drained and rinsed

1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed

1 (15 ounce) can chili beans (pintos)

    2 cans chopped green chiles

2 (24 ounce) cans diced tomatoes

    4 cloves garlic, chopped

    2 tablespoons cocoa powder

    1/4 cup sugar

    1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder

    1/2 tablespoon cayenne pepper

    1/2 tablespoon cumin

    3 tablespoons green jalapeno sauce

    3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

    1/2 cup red wine

Combine ground beef, onion, green bell pepper and liquid smoke in a large skillet. Cook until ground beef is browned; drain. Move beef mixture to a very large pot. Add all other ingredients. Bring to a boil, then simmer on medium heat for 45 minutes to an hour.

    Yield: about 8 servings
