Any advice for my baby with her cold and teething?

My baby daughter is five months old and last week started teething, she has two teeth coming through at the bottom! (very exciting!) The problem is that for the last two weeks she's had a runny nose. I spoke to her peadriatrician last week and she said that this is normal when teething and to buy one of those vacum things to clear her nose and give her a spoonful of water before her feed to clear her throat. The problem is that for the past three days she's become worse and every morning when she wakes up she's covered with mucus and can't breath very well it breaks my heart to see her like that and I have to clean and clear her nose before she feeds as she can't feed very well if not. Apart from that she's a happy baby and sleeps 12 hours a night and has a nap in the morning and afternoon. I have an appointment on Tuesday as she has to have her 5 month check up, but obviously if she gets a temperature I'll take her to the doctors/hospital sooner. But I'd really welcome some advice.

I had a similar problem with my son at about the same age. He caught a really nasty cold and was having trouble with his teeth at the same time. I just kept him dosed up with Calpol (obv taking care not to OD) and used some snufflebabe rub on his chest. I also put some Carvol on a bib and tied it to his cot out of his reach, so he could inhale it. He was ill for probably about a week but gradually got better. It was pretty gradual though. She will be fine, but I know what you mean about hating seeing them suffering. It's not easy and it's hard to believe their little bodies can fight these things off, but they can. She's stronger than you think.

Wishing your little girl better xx

My 9wk old baby is very snuffly at the mo but not very snotty - I use Saline nose drops before feeds if he is really bad and I put a bit of children's Olbas Oil on a tissue by the cot to help him breathe in the night.

if the mucus is yellow or green, she may have an infection and need antibiotics so keep an eye on that and maybe see the doc if it gets any worse.

Its very easy for people to blame everything on teething but the chances are that its unrelated.

Its a horrible time but I'm sure she will be better soon

    Good luck xxx

it might be a little cold that isnt related to the teething. teething seems to throw the babies off. my neighbor was pulling at her ears when teething once and her mom took her to the doctor thinking it was an ear infection, but he just said molars are coming in thats why shes rubbing.

is the mucas yellow or clear? is she sneezing or coughing?

she seems congested, and that usually doesnt happen with teething. if shes old enough, (im not sure the age) but theres some saline nose drops for babies called Little Noses, give it a try.

    good luck!

    she'll be better soon :-)

oh, and when my neighbor was around that age with a cold, she was told to give her some water in the bottle twice a day, like 2 ounces each time.

water is apparently bad for babies, unless the dr. tells u small amounts. just try to keep her happy and sing to her, put some music on, tell her a story too
