USB won't recognize external hard drive?

I have an HP and have an external hard drive attached to it. Until yesterday everything worked fine. Then all of a sudden the external hard drive doesn't show up in my computer. The external drive houses some vital files for my karaoke business. Do I need to have the external hard drive repaired?

Try to use your drive in another computer. If it works, then there is an issue with your own computer. If it doesn't, then you have a damaged hard drive.

Did you power the computer up with it disconnected? That could confuse your operating system as it looks for it. I had to do a system restore once when I powered up my laptop without my mouse connected. You cannot just connect and disconnect hardware without telling the computer first.
