Best ways to get around NYC?

I'll be heading to NYC next weekend (am from Ontario) and we'll be flying in. Just wondering what is the best (cheapest/easiest) way to get around the city. Bascially, we're going to see the main tourist attractions (Times Square, Empire State Building, China Town, Little Italy, World Trade Center Site, Soho, East Village). I'll be staying not far from Central Park. I'm just now realizing how expensive travelling around may be.

I agree that NYC Subways/Buses and walking are best.

I suggest you should get 7-Day Pass which cost $7.50.

You may find the hotel, store merchant in NYC or Westchester County, MetroCard van/buses that sell that. MetroCard can also be found at Subway Stations.

Subways, NYCT Buses/MTA Bus locals and Bee-Line local/shuttle buses along with MTA Long Island Bus are $2.

    Express buses are $5.

    There's even prefix identification.

    B: Brooklyn local/limited

    Bx: Bronx local/limited

    M: Manhattan local/limited.

    Q: Queens local/limited.

    S: Staten Island local/limited.

Express buses $5: Inbound pickup in boroughs, drop-off in Manhattan. Outbound pickup in Manhattan and drop-off in outbound. Pay-Per-Ride or 7-Day Express Bus Plus at $41 is accepted on these buses. THis includes BM, BxM, QM, X, Bee-Line BxM4C, Atlantic Express- Staten Island Express of X23/X24.

As a native New Yorker, I would suggest buying a MetroCard-it is our bus and subway pass. You can buy a 1 day "fun pass". Unforunately, they-New York City transit-doesn't sell fun passes for more than 1 day at a time, but the good news is that if you buy one, you can use it all day without having to spend more to refill it. I would also suggest strongly getting bus, subway and directional maps so that you can get around; although people are willing to be helpful, not everyone knows their way around.

The best way to get around NYC is by either subway or walk. For your first day you might want to try one of the double decker tour buses which allow you to hop on and off at different spots.

For the second day of your visit get out a map and plan which things you want to see. Then figure out if they are within walking distance of each other. For example Times Square and the Empire State Building are within easy walking distance form each other.

Please remember that the sidewalks here are our freeways, please do not clog them up unless you want to get knocked down by another pedestrian.

Enjoy, have a good time, then go home.

  • As soon as you arrive, stop by your closest train station and pick up an MTA bus and train map. Buy yourself a weekly unlimited metrocard. It won't expire for 7 days and you can use it as many times as you want. That's the best way to get around the city.

The best way is really the Metro system (bus/trains) and walking.

Typically - you can get a weekly metrocard ($25USD), which allows you to hop on the train as many times as you want during the day.

when i went last year, we took a tour of the city through the hotel we were staying at. You see a lot in one day, but you don't spend a lot of time at each stop. Its not a bad deal, if you went on your own, you'll need at least a whole week. We travel via the subway with special week long passes you can purchase when you get there

I'd recommend walking and the subway. Taxis only if you know the EXACT address. Sometimes they can rip you off. And if you take the subway, make sure that your valuables are in front of you, not in the 'sucker pocket'. And if you take a cab, make sure that it has a meter in it. Just common sense :D

    Have fun!!
