cheap is the worst thing you can do.

ive seen lightening strikes destroy the cheapest timers first.
and often
yes you can easily swap it out.
take some masking tape and label each wire so you dont get them confused and it will help you wire it properly.
i would go with a hunter or a rainbird timer.
Hunter Pro-C or SRC
Rainbird ESPs are pretty decent. not as good as hunter, but decent.
avoid toro, orbit, or anything from home depot for that matter.
you can get a hunter or rainbird timer from the internet or at a landscape supply store.

yes some of the cheapest timers work great. toro , lowes ok as if one timer is going to withstand a lightning strike better then another , spend $30 and have 4 timed relays , or spend $100 dollars and have 6 timed relays and alot of extra bells and whistles , one timer will be the least of your problems with a lightening strike that close .

absolutely, easy to switch out. reconnect the zone wires to the same stations, and you will be fine.
