For #1, use Heron's formula. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heron%27s_formula
That way you don't need to find the base and height... it's pretty awesome.
I agree with the other response about #2, 3, though. Those are the easiest ways to get the answers.

1. Find the height of the triangle and use (1/2)bh then using that area multiply by the height.
2. (28x12)x(14x12)=56448
7x7 =49
56448/49 = 1152
3. Use a triangle with leg (18.4/2) and hypotenuse of 21.8 and use pythagorean theorem.
